Extended Producer Responsibilty …a.k.a. Please take back your packaging!
Oh businesses, we’ve got a question for you. What’s up with the packaging? According to a report by the Toronto Environmental Alliance, 70% of our garbage is packaging. In the 1920's only 7% of our waste was packaging. That means packaging waste has increased by 10 times. WHOA!!!!
We need some change and we need businesses to start paying attention to EPR – Extended Producer Responsibility. One of the things that was created to help deal with all the excess packaging was the Blue Box program. This program provides an interesting technique for the residents to do their part to recycle packaging waste. But really, why are WE paying for the blue box? We’re paying to take care of a problem created by businesses. Companies should start deciding on how they can deal with their packaging because it’s their product.

Not enough restaurants are taking responsible for their packaging as well, but two great examples are : Tiffinday and Urban Herbivore. Both companies are packaging their foods in completely reusable containers. What a novel idea and really what a simple idea. It’s EPR at it’s best.
So, to all the companies and Business people out there...
YOU GOT TO ACT...NOW!!! (and oh yeah, consumers, you can help by buying products from the companies we’ve mentioned above because they’re doing the right thing. By Benjamin
